Backpack Health Worker Teams

Backpack Health Worker Team (BPHWT) is an extraordinary group of medics based in Mae Sot, Thailand — providing lifesaving healthcare in some of the most dangerous and remote corners of Burma.. These medics are not outsiders — they are recruited from the very villages they serve, bringing compassion, cultural understanding, and a deep commitment to healing their people.

The school encourages a new generation to have a personal commitment to Burma, so students will return to Burma or the border after university and/or additional training, to guide and educate their people, and continue to work for change in their communities.

OUR VALUES

Board Efficiency and Integrity

We have a small, streamlined board and low overhead in order to maximize responsiveness to our programs. Over 90% of our Functional Expenses support our programs.

Equal Opportunity

We believe enduring peace in Burma will only be possible when women and men enjoy equal opportunity to reach their potential.  BHM partners with community-based organizations that seek to reduce gender disparities in access to opportunities and resources and that seek to increase the capability of women and girls to realize their rights, determine their life outcomes, and influence decision-making in households, communities, and their society.

Climate Change

Climate Change is one of the most urgent and serious environmental, economic, political, social, and humanitarian issues of our time.  As advocates for the future of the people of Burma, we call upon global leaders to act to prevent and mitigate the effects of climate change, and to level the global playing field with regards to Least Developed Nations, such as Burma.  We partner with organizations that are working to develop the country to ensure a healthy and sustainable future.
